Strategic Initiatives

In 2005, following a very successful auction, the trustees of NCEF commissioned an assessment of the needs of children in Collier County. The study, performed by the Lastinger Center for Learning at the University of Florida, proved to be a comprehensive overview of the status of child well-being in our seaside community and an invaluable tool as the foundation has grown into a first-class grant maker. The study found several significant gaps in basic services for Collier kids. The trustees felt they could make a significant and sustainable impact by engaging in what are widely referred to as NCEF's Strategic Initiatives. Through these Strategic Initiatives, it is the intention of the trustees to make a systemic, significant, and enduring change in the lives of children in Collier County. By proactively engaging in long-term partnerships with other foundations and non-profits, NCEF has positioned itself to accomplish this goal.

From the 2005 needs assessment, the leaders at NCEF chose to help close the service gaps in the following areas:

Pediatric Oral Health
Early Childhood Education
Social Welfare (detailed and extensive research beginning in 2008)

Immokalee-based Initiatives

In response to the overwhelming need for children's services in Immokalee, NCEF and other local partnering foundations commissioned a follow-up assessment of the needs of the at risk and impoverished children living in this community. Immokalee rests just 35 miles east of Naples and is dominated by the agriculture industry. With over 90% of the children in the community living in poverty, NCEF has committed a substantial amount of funds over the next three years to the following initiatives:

Out of School Services (after school/summer programming, etc)
Early Childhood Development
Pediatric Pre- and Post-Natal Medical Care
