Terroir. The Dictionary defines it as ‘the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as soil, topography and climate.’ Some say they could have saved their breath and just said “Beaucastel.” Few wine regions and even fewer vineyards in the world better define the importance of “terroir” than Château Beaucastel.

Ancient soils, hot sunny Mediterranean days, cooled by the ferocious mistral winds that blow down from the Alps, all contribute to the distinctive wines of the Southern Rhône. Of course, the Perrin family probably recognized this when they obtained the Beaucastel property early in the twentieth century. Today, the fifth generation of Perrins continues a long heritage of paying homage to the elements that make their wines a natural expression of their place.

The incredible lot assembled here, bottles big and small, are a collector’s wildest dream. One could fill a book with Robert Parker, Jr.’s praise for the Beaucastel wines, especially the Hommage à Jacques Perrin, made mostly from very old Mourvèdre vines yielding tiny quantities of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit and produced in only the best vintages. Those fortunate enough to have tasted this never forget it!

Starting with six regular-sized bottles of the 99+ point 2001 Hommage; a very limited production wine when it is made at all, is the special release honoring Jacques Perrin, grandfather of the new generation. It also includes six bottles of the 2004 Hommage and an extremely limited 3 Liter bottle each of the 2003 and 2004 vintages. These large format bottles, rated 95-98 points and 96-100 points respectively, are likely to be nothing short of impossible to obtain outside of this auction.

Three wines in the lot from the excellent 2004 vintage were rated 93+ points by Parker, Jr.; a wine he called “one of the vintage’s finest” and potentially one of the longest lived. You will also take home Beaucastel’s 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape in bottles, Magnums and the 3 Liter Jeroboam!

Hold on, we’re not finished yet! You’ll even own a case of the 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, clearly a vin de garde, a wine that will drink beautifully for decades to come. Perhaps the pie´ce de résistance of this phenomenal lot are the six Magnums of the Château Beaucastel 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a wine so young, so powerful, it is expected to drink well into the middle of this century!

Tallying up this unrivaled collection, you will be taking home the equivalent of 66 bottles from the legendary Château Beaucastel, a producer who sets the standard for the wines of Southern Rhône.
