Some wines are so special that they define and even transcend their categories. Rare Champagne is one of those: with only 14 vintages released since 1976, it represents the ultimate cuvée of Piper-Heidsieck.
The winning bidders’ party of four will have an insider’s view of the selection and blending of Rare Champagne—as well as world-class cuisine, accommodations fit for a president and the very best of both Paris and Reims.
Piper-Heidsieck was founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck, who presented Queen Marie Antoinette with his first cuvée. It was love at first sip, and she became the brand’s initial ambassador.
The best was yet to come. In 1985, Piper-Heidsieck released the first vintage of Rare (Vintage 1976), their luxury cuvée, composed of the finest grapes from their best vineyard sources. Rare was designated a standalone brand and eventually became one of the world’s most sought-after Champagnes.
Your journey begins in Paris, where your party will spend three nights in Suites at the luxurious Alfred Sommier Hotel, centrally located in the capital’s 8th arrondissement. You’ll receive a private tour of the Palace of Versailles, perhaps visiting the very spot where Marie Antoinette sipped the first Heidsieck. Your time in Paris will include a visit to Mellerio, the oldest (and last) family-owned jewelry house in France—famed for the Mellerio cut, a 57-facet jewel cut, shaped as an oval within an ellipse.
Next, you’ll travel from the French capital to the capital of Champagne, where you’ll walk in the steps of history. Your party will luxuriate in Suites at the Résidence Eisenhower. Passionately restored, it will transport you back to 1945. The Résidence Eisenhower is named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who wrote the peace treaty in 1945 while staying in the Résidence. Your historical experience will continue with a private tour of the 11th-century Reims Cathedral, the traditional site for the coronation of the Kings of France.
Chef de Cave Émilien Boutillat or a member of his team will welcome you at Rare Champagne, conducting a tour of the vineyards and cellar, and explaining the art of blending and the balance between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Your appreciation of Rare Champagne will be enhanced at a splendid dinner at Résidence Eisenhower featuring a collection of older vintages. Before leaving Reims, you’ll have lunch at Royal Champagne and enjoy both the cuisine of Chef Christophe Raoux and the magnificent view of the surrounding vineyards.
Each couple will receive a pair of vintage-dated Magnums of Rare Champagne, and memories of your time in Reims will come alive as you revisit the Brut and Rosé.
What could be rarer than Rare Champagne? The opportunity to enhance the future of a needy child. Bid high and make it happen!
This lot is for two (2) couples. Visit to be scheduled for mutually agreeable dates, excluding the month of September. The tasting with Émilien Boutillat is based on his availability. If he is unavailable, the tasting will be hosted by a member of his team. Meals are only included as stated above and served with select wine, alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages. Lunch at Royal Champagne will be à la carte and served with select wine. Gratuities are only included for the dinner at Résidence Eisenhower.
