Angelo Gaja has been called “the man who dragged Piedmont into the modern world,” achieving the same revolutionary impact that Piero Antinori accomplished in Tuscany. The GAJA winery was founded in Barbaresco in 1859 by Angelo’s great-grandfather. Eventually he expanded into Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino, and GAJA wines became coveted collectibles around the globe.

Five lucky couples will experience the sophistication of Milan, the serenity of the Barolo countryside and a special exploration of the evolution of GAJA wines. When Angelo joined the company in 1961 at the age of 21, he began introducing innovations such as green harvesting, malolactic fermentation, barrique aging and the planting of French grape varieties—despite the staunch opposition of his father. Today, the day-to-day operations of the estate are supervised by his three children: Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni.

Your journey begins in Milan, Italy’s second-largest city and a leader in fashion, art, architecture and finance. Your party will sleep in luxurious Junior Suites at the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, located steps from the 15th-century Palazzo del Monte di Pietà as well as the famous Duomo, or Milan Cathedral.

From Milan, you’ll travel to Monforte d’Alba in the heart of the Barolo region for a four-night stay at MON, a private villa set in the hills of the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa’s bedrooms are adorned with hand-made objects by skilled local craftsmen, hemp fabrics made from one of the last Italian hand looms and hand-painted ceramics and porcelain. The walls of the house are covered with original artworks and striking photography.

A Gaja family member will guide you through the winery and host an extraordinary vertical tasting of wines spanning five decades. The high points are likely to include the famous Barbarescos and Barolos; Darmagi, the ground-breaking Cabernet Sauvignon; and wines from the Tuscan estates of Pieve Santa Restituta and Ca’Marcanda. The winning bidders will all share a Five Liter bottle of 1997 Sperss.

Just as the Gaja family has perpetuated their values for five generations, your generosity will enable a new generation of children to succeed.
