With superlative hotels, restaurants, trains and river cruises in 22 countries, Belmond is synonymous with luxury travel. The winning bidders’ party of four will experience the diverse habitats of Peru—ranging from arid plains to towering peaks and Amazon rainforest—during an epic, eight-night journey that will reveal the high points of this amazing country.
Your adventure begins in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, located in the Andes Mountains. After traveling from Lima and checking into your Junior Suites in the Rio Sagrado, A Belmond Hotel bordering on the Urubamba River, you’ll witness a spiritual high point of the trip: the “Payment to the Earth”, an ancient ancestral custom still performed by indigenous Andean cultures. Led by a shaman, this ritual of giving back to nature highlights the reciprocal relationship between the Incas and their land.
Over the next few days, you’ll observe the techniques used to make traditional Andean garments such as dresses, ponchos, chullo hats and ruanas. You’ll have the opportunity to explore village life at a typical market and the famous salt flats of Maras. History will come alive at the haunting archaeological site of Moray, home to a variety of Inca ruins arranged in concentric circles. During a visit to Chinchero, a picturesque Native village on the windswept plains of Anta, you’ll learn about the importance of traditional crafts such as weaving, braiding and dyeing.
It’s time to board the luxurious Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train that makes day trips to Macchu Picchu, a 15th century citadel often referred to as “the lost city of the Incas.” On your journey, your group will enjoy exquisite Peruvian cuisine while savoring the extraordinarily beautiful setting of the Upper Amazon basin on the eastern slopes of the Andes.
The Hiram Bingham will then take you to Cusco, where you’ll stay overnight at the Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel in the heart of the ancient Inca capital. After a tour of the city and a visit to the Cathedral, participate in a hands-on cooking class to learn about local specialties and unlock the secrets of crafting the pisco sour, Peru’s signature cocktail.
From Cusco you’ll connect with the Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America’s first luxury train and the world’s highest rail route, for a breathtaking journey through the countryside. Your itinerary will include stops at Raqch’i to explore the Temple of Wiracocha; La Raya Pass, which marks the border between the regions of Cusco and Puna, where you’ll see alpacas, llamas and vicunas grazing on the slope; a boat trip to the Uros floating islands; and an overnight at Lake Titicaca, where you’ll witness the sunrise the next morning.
After a stop at the remarkable Sumbay Caves, featuring more than 500 ancient paintings and engravings of local wildlife, you’ll tour the colonial city of Arequipa and return to Lima. A Belmond representative will assist you in connecting with your flight back home.
The magic of your time in Peru will come back to you with memories of sights, smells and tastes encountered along the way. Just as it has been a life-changing experience for you, you’ll have the knowledge that you’ve also changed the destiny of some of our neediest children.
