Lucio Tasca d’Almerita was an Italian winemaker and Olympic equestrian. He was known simply by many in his native Sicily as “Conte Lucio.” In 1961, he began working with his father at Regaleali, the company that had been in the family since 1830 and which later became Conte Tasca d’Almerita; both Regaleali and Conte Lucio were instrumental in bringing Sicilian wine into the 20th century and onto the world stage.

Two couples will discover the depth and breadth of the late Count Lucio’s wine heritage, along with insights into the art, culture and cuisine of his native Sicily.

In 1979, after traveling to fine wine regions around the world, he secretly planted four rows each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Lucio’s father was adamantly against the production of international varieties, believing instead in Sicily’s native grapes such as Grillo and Nero d’Avola. But after a blind tasting of his son’s early efforts, the elder Tasca d’Almerita relented, and Lucio is credited as the first to bring international varieties to Sicily.

Your journey begins with an overnight stay at Villa Tasca, located near Palermo in a 20-acre park full of citrus orchards and majestic century-old trees. Originally built in the 1500s, the building is both a historic site and a family home. You’ll relax in one of the vintage suites and enjoy dinner hosted by the Tasca family and accompanied by their wines. A private tour of Palermo will include famous street food such as chickpea fritters, aranicini (stuffed rice balls), boiled octopus and cannoli. Traditional Sicilian dishes will also be featured during lunch at the Michelin-recommended Buatta.

From Palermo it’s a short drive along the coast to Tenuta Regaleali, the center of the Tasca d’Almerita brand and the most important of its five estates, supervised today by Conte Lucio’s sons. The 1200 acres of vines are farmed sustainably and augmented with olive trees, almond trees and wheat. Estate Manager Corrado Maurigi will introduce you to the property and host a private tasting.

In addition to dinners at the estate, you’ll experience a hands-on cooking class and lunch served with Regaleali wines such as Nozze d’Oro (a white blend of Sauvignon and Inzolia), Vigna San Francesco Cabernet Sauvignon and Riserva del Conte (a collector’s wine made only in the best vintages, composed of Perricone and Nero d’Avola).

Your final two nights will be spent at Five-star Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel, which is a fabled 19th century palazzo and the ideal home base to explore one of Europe’s oldest and most intriguing cities. A day trip to Mothia Island, one of the Mediterranean’s important Phoenician settlements, will include a visit to the Whitaker Museum to view the unique collection of Phoenician artifacts. The fields around the museum are strewn with ruins from the ancient settlement and can be explored on foot.

You’ve already experienced Palermo’s street food, and now it’s time to indulge in more refined cuisine at the Michelin-starred Gagini. Chef Mauricio Zillo’s “experiment in extemporaneous cooking” is totally focused on local Sicilian products and explores the connection between the flavors of its ingredients and the character of the land.

The winning bidders will receive a collection of Tasca d’Almerita’s best wines in Magnum format, which will renew memories of your time in Sicily.

Embark on this Sicilian journey, rich in heritage and flavor, and take pride in knowing your generosity is shaping a brighter future for the children of Collier County.
